a_ku offers lectures, seminars and tutorials to bachelor students providing knowledge on history and theory of architecture and design. Different topics each semester relate to four general topics:
Graduate students wishing to pursue their own research and projective studies, to enhance scientific skills and gain new insights are provided with support to their individual master's theses and are offered advanced courses relating to three general topics:
Learning from Modernity
Introduction into the history and theory of architecture, the city, landscape and arts from the beginning of modernity to the present using the example of ideas, processes and projects that came into operation globally and locally with the development and transformation of modernism. Central topics and works are introduced and discussed with regard to the complex historical and transdisciplinary coherences as well as their relevance for contemporary practices of architecture. Based on comprehensive and thematically structured lectures, tutorials focus on and develop further specific aspects through readings and case studies.
Lecture, seminar, tutorial B.Sc. architecture
It is one vital task of the architect to develop, represent and communicate ideas, concepts and actual plannings. Students in this seminar research viewpoints, intellectual approaches and ways of presentation of different international architectural practices, that all pick up, modify and enhance the ideas, design means and architectural interpretations of Mies van der Rohe. They are being analysed with regard to their specific potentials and their future potentials, interpreted, and set in a wider context. By this way, contemporary horizons and their qualities shall be illustrated; conceptual skills and competences in communication through media shall be gained in order to use them for one own's future creative projects.
Seminar B.Sc. architecture
How much "home" do we need? What does "home" mean in times of global change - an development constantly blurring the meaning of feeling at home in a certain place and space. And: What does it mean for the designing of architecture, city and open space? To take this as a topic, to question and develop it is the aim of this course.

The creating of atmospheres is a highly regarded topic in current discourses, and it often times is connected to specific qualities of transparency - material qualities as well as spatial ones, that are being generated by the relation of open/closed, light/dense, and by the overlaying of structures. It is a paraphrase for dimensions of perception, design and effect, that cannot be comprehended in simple ways. The Backgrounds, intentions and means of designs working with transparency shall be examined, and by the analysis of their different characteristics and ways of perception, an input for the reflexive and creative development of one own's design repertoire is generated. The students, using exemplary concepts and projects, research the significance of transparency in architecture, art, city and free space between material, space and immateriality. It is being reflected upon it's anthropological and cultural contexts, and discussed in respect of it's practice-oriented qualities.
Seminar B.Sc. architecture M.Sc. arch.+landscape arch.
In the dynamic processes of design the attitude and basic concepts of the architects melt together with the specific conditions of the project. Personal references and inquiry do not only give a fresh impetus to design, they have also a stabilizing and simplifying effect. They form a generic factor for creative developments of different solutions. Revolving around the thematic field `Concepts´ different kinds of explicit and tacit knowledge and alternative design models in the field of architecture and urban design will be scrutinized and developed. Both a systematic and an open approach form the specific character of this project being conducted by individual research questions. Goals may include e.g. to consider the relevance of theories and works of models (persons, ideas or courses of action), to look for references and inventories of images, texts or material objects and sites(as reference to nature or science I works of art and architecture I cities, landscapes or the everyday) or to scrutinize concepts for current tasks and developments of architecture and urban design (as density I habitat I alteration). The output should present diverse potentials and be reported by writing and other media (research portfolio with text I visualization). Students will have the opportunity to strengthen their design attitude and composition skills as well as to improve their scientific competences.
Long project M.Sc. architecture
This free project offers students the opportunity to reflect upon and further research newly gained architectural knowledge, questions and methods by means of a individually chosen subject. In the outcome, specific qualities and potentials for the architectural design and the development of our environment shall be pointed out. This process of new experiences and reflections is documented in a scientifically-systematically, either in written form or by using intermedia forms or both. The structure of the topic, as well as the means of working it out are being individually overlooked. By means of this project it is possible to develop a more fundamental understanding of the concept, realisation, argument and communication of architectural designs, exhibition and research projects.
Short or long project with individual supervision and revision by arrangement
